Roads are mostly excellent, and there are many places to visit, including the attractive coastal town of San Vicente de la Baquera, about 40 minutes drive west of Santander.  Popular with summer visitors. with it’s many cafes and bars dotted along the palm tree lined promenade, and the lovely long Oyambre beach, it is well worth a visit.

Comillas is another popular, but smaller town, and has a good beach, and surprisingly some interesting Goudi buildings to see.

Santillana del Mar with it’s preserved medieval houses and cobbled streets, has won the title of the prettiest village in the whole of Spain more than once, and is very popular with tourists.

Inland is the beautiful Liebana valley, with it’s own ‘Mediterranean’ micro climate and many traditional farming villages. Even further inland is the Campoo valley and the large Ebro reservoir of Reinosa. The ski resort of Alto Campoo is nearby on the borders of Castilla y Leon in the Codillera Cantabria mountains.

Cantabria shares some of the 300 square miles of the Picos National Park with Asturias, and includes the charming village of Potes.

For outdoor enthusiasts there is plenty to do, including walking, canoeing, fishing, horse riding, biking, sailing, golf, skiing, and surfing.

 

Santander itself, has seen many new urbanizations spring up the last 20 years around the city, and along the coastline of Cantabria, so there are plenty of new houses, villas, and low level apartments available. There are also plenty of rural properties available, both restored, and for renovation, near the coast and inland.

Because of it’s proximity to Bilbao. and regional prosperity, of all the three regions we cover, property in Cantabria has tended to be the most expensive, however, since the property crash of of 2007, prices have become more affordable, and are now closer to those of Eastern Asturias.


Getting there.

The closest airport is Santander airport, which has regular flights with Ryanair from Stansted and Edinburgh.

You can also fly to Bilbao, which is one hour from Santander.
Easyjet fly to Bilbao from Bristol, Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

There is also a ferry port in Santander with a regular ferry service operated thoughout the year, by Brittany ferries, from Portsmouth and Plymouth.

In addition, Brittany ferries operate a regular ferry service to nearby Bilbao, from Portsmouth.

Crossings take approximately 24 hours to Santander.
